As many are aware October has long been acknowledged as Breast Cancer Awareness month. According to statistics 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer in their lifetime (breastcancer.org). Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in the world according to the World Health Organization. It is hard to say why situations like this would occur to good people, people like us, and people we love. It takes a heavy toll on the individual and their loved ones physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Although we may not have all the answers to our situation there is one place we can always turn to for guaranteed strength and support - The Word of God.
The Bible tells us ,
"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging." -Psalm 46:1-3
"In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength." -Isaiah 30:1
"Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." -Philippians 4:6
In October, our church focused on sharing living hope through a month long sermon series, Faith Over Fear. Each week we spent time learning more about this common disease, how to support others spiritually and emotionally in the midst of a trail, based on the Word of the Lord, and also devoting a special time to pray for those being effected by breast cancer.
"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." -Joshua 1:9
